Candle & Wax Melt Safety

Before you light or melt

Please read these safety notes before using any Moon & Maple candle or wax melt. Keeping to them protects your home and gets the best scent throw from your products.

Candle safety

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and never burn one near anything flammable such as curtains, bedding or paper.
  • Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Trim the wick to about 5mm before every burn to prevent smoking and sooting.
  • On the first burn, allow the wax to melt across the full surface of the container. This prevents tunnelling.
  • Burn for no longer than 4 hours at a time, and stop burning when about 10mm of wax remains.
  • Always place candles on a heat-resistant, level, stable surface.
  • Keep candles at least 10cm apart and away from draughts, vents and direct sunlight.
  • Never move a candle while it is lit or while the wax is molten.
  • Extinguish with a snuffer rather than blowing, and never use water.

Wax melt safety

  • Use one or two cubes at a time in a suitable wax warmer or burner, following the warmer manufacturer's instructions.
  • Never add water to the wax, and never melt wax on a hob, in a microwave or in an oven.
  • Never leave a lit or switched-on warmer unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
  • Place the warmer on a heat-resistant, level, stable surface away from draughts and anything flammable.
  • If using a tealight burner, use only 4-hour tealights and do not burn for longer than 4 hours at a time.
  • Allow the wax and the warmer to cool completely before handling, cleaning or changing the wax.
  • Do not overfill the dish, and never move it while the wax is molten.

Changing and removing wax

Once the scent has faded, let the wax cool and harden, then gently pop it out of the dish. Wipe the dish with a dry paper towel. Do not pour melted wax down a sink or drain.

Health and general warnings

  • Wax and fragrance oils can cause an allergic skin reaction in some people. Avoid contact with skin and wash hands after handling.
  • Keep away from children and pets. Wax melts are not edible and can be a choking hazard.
  • Use in a well-ventilated room, and stop use if anyone in the home experiences irritation or discomfort.
  • Do not use candles or wax melts as a heat source.
  • Always read the safety information printed on the product label, which takes precedence over this page.
